Digital Native Academy is a digital media and innovation practice which has offices in The Public in West Bromwich and in Spectacle Works in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. It has been in existence for six years and in that time has provided a range of services to the public, private, academic and thirds sectors.
The company was formed to exploit the opportunities provided by interactive games technology and used the underlying software to create innovative solutions for clients. It’s Gaming the Tibby project won its client, Sandwell MBC, the Ordnance Survey Innovation Award 2008 for innovative use of OS data as part of a neighbourhood planning exercise.
The company successfully utilised a Technology Strategy Board grant to increase its understanding of games engine software solutions in association with Birmingham and Staffordshire Universities and used the results to invest in new capability. It subsequently won the Outstanding Business Development Award for the West Midlands region.
This additional expertise resulted in new work including that from the Ministry of Defence to design an iPad based software simulator to train soldiers in the use of a robot for bomb detection/disposal purposes.
It has expanded its workforce to encompass new innovation services and works extensively with universities in the region to exploit emerging new technologies. Its work on the Bayard’s Colts Heritage Lottery project involved a productive partnership with Warwick Manufacturing Group involving 3D laser scanning, data manipulation and 3D printing. The company is now developing further new services around this enhanced capability.
It is currently working with the Black Country LEP and has been commissioned to produce a virtual 3D car and database to highlight the world class expertise in the automotive supply chain in the Black Country.
